宋七梧莞尔一笑，“（我猜是馆主，或者是你。）”宋七梧指指东方男子。
馆主，东方男子，爱德华警官，还有其他参观者，皆露出吃惊的表情，尤其东方男子更惊诧。
“I think this lady must be joking with officer Edward. How can the owner of the house steal it? And why do I steal a pipe?（我想这位夫人一定是在跟爱德华警官来玩笑呢，馆主怎么可能监守自盗？而我又为什么要盗窃烟斗？）”东方男子辩驳起来。
“All the visitors and waiters were questioned， and they all proved that they were not thieves， that the gentleman had proved himself， and that neither I nor my husband had stolen， leaving you and the owner of the Hudson Pavilion.（所有的参观者和侍者都被询问过，他们都证明了自己不是盗窃者，这位先生也已经为自己证明过了，而我和我的丈夫也没有盗窃，那就只剩下你和赫德森馆主了。）”宋七梧先用排除法，末了，还跟大家开了个玩笑，“Did the pipe fly away with its wings?（难道烟斗自己长了翅膀飞走了？）”
“Ha ha ha...（哈哈哈……）”参观者全都哄笑起来。
赫德森馆主忽然问，“What's the reason?（理由呢？）”而且，被怀疑为盗窃者，她看起来一点也不担心。
宋七梧摊开手，“Maybe this is a joke. If I'm not mistaken， Hudson and this...你怎么称呼？（或许这就是一个玩笑，如果我没猜错的话，赫德森馆主和这位……你怎么称呼？）”宋七梧这才想起问东方男子的名字，而且是用中文问的。
没想到东方男子也用中文回答，“我叫林木。”
“OK， Mr. Lin， he and Hudson， who are known， may still be friends.（行，林木先生，他和赫德森馆主是认识的，或许还是朋友。）”
林木眼中划过一抹光亮，顾星乔没有错过。
赫德森馆主也惊喜的问，“Unbelievably， how do you know we know each other?（难以置信，你是如何知道我们认识的？）”
“First， he was very skillful when he asked you questions， and he was familiar with the two rooms. Second， when he proposed that the theft should be solved by ourselves， the owner of the Hudson Pavilion agreed unconditionally. If you were not friends， I don't think the owner of the Hudson Pavilion would agree to his proposal so easily.（第一，刚才询问大家的时候，他表现得很娴熟，而且对这两间屋子也很熟悉，第二，当他提出失窃事件由我们自己解决的时候，赫德森馆主毫无条件的同意了，如果你们不是朋友，我想赫德森馆主不会这么轻易同意他的提议。）”
“But that doesn't prove they're thieves.（但是，这也不能证明他们就是盗窃者啊。）”爱德华警官说，“ Lin may be a policeman， so skilled at asking visitors.（或许，林也是警察，所以询问参观者才那么娴熟呢。）”
“No， Mr. Lin is not a policeman， and he knows the same thing as officer Edward.（不，林木不是警察，而且他和爱德华警官你也同样认识）”
“何以见得？”林木问，他眼里的光越发亮了。
“因为爱德华警官无条件相信了你说的话，他进门来之后，没有查看失窃现场，没有询问别人，你说什么就是什么。”宋七梧胸有成竹的回答。
